Water Quality Advocacy

Be Aware.

Ours is a pivotal time. It is time to join the chorus of voices helping educate and create positive change in how we protect the complex marine ecosystem.

The global plastic waste crisis continues to grow in scale. Without concerted intervention, the annual flow of plastic into the ocean is forecast to nearly triple by 2040.

Upstream, mismanaged runoff causes algae blooms, producing toxins that kill fish and render shellfish dangerous to consume.

SEA TURTLE PROTECTION

Get Educated.

Healthy oceans need sea turtles.

Sea turtles are a “keystone species”. If removed from their habitat, the natural order will be disrupted, impacting other marine wildlife and ecosystem.

In response, the global community recognizes the need to protect both their habitat and health. Whether removing plastics from the oceans, protecting their nesting grounds, or helping nurse sick or injured sea turtles back to health, we at Guy Harvey Outpost strive to protect these gentle guardians of our oceans.

MARINE HABITAT HEALTH

Be Involved.

Marine habitats and biodiversity are declining faster than at any other time in human history. Healthy habitats are essential to the survival all marine life. When lost they are challenging and costly to restore. Coral reefs worldwide are experiencing more severe coral bleaching events, with frequencies now as short as six years versus 30 years as recent as 1980, altogether insufficient time for full recovery of coral cover.

Fish nursery grounds have been significantly affected by seagrass and mangrove loss and degradation, particular conditions in coastal estuaries and watersheds.

These habitats reach to the horizon. Maintaining their health is a task for many. Cleaning marshes and beaches, replanting grass and mangrove seedlings, restoring coral colonies – all are slow work requiring the efforts of many. They are the stewards of our future and together they hold the power to make sustaining positive change.

Their childhood happiness and freedoms are nothing more than wishes unfulfilled. The days are challenges to survive, for both they and their families.

These little warriors are not to be forgotten. They are to whom we intend to leave a better world. Their fight for their future is our duty is to support.

Be Thankful.

We are all called to serve and protect. Some of us as stewards of the environment, called to battle the threats to our oceans. Others as stewards of the peace, called to battle the threats to our liberty. For these true warriors, many bear the mental and physical scars of combat to the edge of their life.

These men and women, and their families, deserve so much more than just thanks for their service. Without their sacrifice there is no world for our children to inherit, regardless of how well we as environmental stewards serve.
